Ways to fill the first page

I’m not one for resolutions but after a bit of a gap in posts in 2020 I’m attempting to put things right – at least for as long as I can remain positive that there might eventually be some travels to look forward to again…

To help with that and after a bit of reminiscing, I’ve set myself up with a new ‘bullet journal’ for this year and extended this to include some creative, travel and related projects. Then of course I’ve included a to do list and various trackers that should motivate me to sustain the restrictions for a bit longer.

Although the first page of a new notebook, journal, bullet journal, sketchbook or scrapbook (smashbook) is no different to any other page in the book, it always feels a little bit daunting and particularly difficult to fill.

If, like me you are missing travel, or just need a little inspiration with filling the first page of whatever book you might be planning, here’s a few ideas. I’ll definitely be using this list to remind myself from time to time so please share any other recommendations.

1. A title page

This could simply be a few words, an image, a doodle or whatever takes your fancy. If you haven’t determined an appropriate title yet, just leave a box to fill in later, and consider decorating or doodling around this. A printed image, photo or inspirational quote may also work here.

2. An index, contents or itinerary page

Typically I always mark up the first couple of pages of my journal as index or contents pages, and add to this as more pages are created. With my Project Life album’s the contents page usually gets compiled and inserted at the end.

3. A map

Particularly relevant for a travel journal or sketch book as it helps with planning out my travels and is great to bring everything together at the end.

4. Contact details

Always a good idea, in case you leave it somewhere. I would be devastated to lose one of my sketchbooks so always include my contact details inside the cover or first page, in the hope that anyone who finds it will contact and return it to me.

5. Leave it blank

This way you can come back to it at the end. which makes it easy to overcome that filling the first page block. Although it might make the 2nd page harder to fill instead ;).

What do you fill the first page with?
